C. Joseph Vijay..

By Vishal V

Today is Sunday (May 10, 2026). Taking a short break amidst my daily delivery work in Bengaluru, as I looked at my mobile screen, history was literally being made in neighboring Tamil Nadu. Breaching the fortress of Dravidian politics that had been solely monopolized by the DMK and AIADMK parties for the past 6 decades, ‘Thalapathy’ C. Joseph Vijay, the founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, has taken the oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu!

All the uncertainties of ‘resort politics’, ‘alliance talks’, and a ‘hung assembly’ that unfolded since the election results were declared on May 4 have come to an end today. Here is the complete ‘live update’ for the readers of ‘The Rhythm & Reason’ regarding the grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, the ‘magic number’ of 120 MLAs that Vijay secured, and the 3 historic files he signed immediately after sitting in the Chief Minister’s chair.

1. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium: “I, C. Joseph Vijay…”

Amidst the applause and whistles of thousands of fans and supporters gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai at 10:00 AM today, a thrilling moment was created.

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay as the Chief Minister

Administration of Oath: Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay as the Chief Minister.

CM Thalapathy: As he stood before the mic and uttered, “C. Joseph Vijay ennum naan…” (I, C. Joseph Vijay…), the entire stadium erupted in cheers. Many fans had tears of joy in their eyes.

Oath of 9 Ministers: Along with CM Vijay, 9 MLAs from the TVK party (including Aadav Arjuna, Bussy Anand, Sengottaiyan, etc.) took the oath as cabinet ministers.

2. The Magic Number of 120: The Calculation Behind Vijay’s ‘Coalition Government’!

For the first time since 1967 in Tamil Nadu’s history, a leader who is neither from the DMK nor the AIADMK has become the Chief Minister. Moreover, this being the state’s first ‘post-poll coalition government’ is a massive historic record.

In the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Vijay’s party (TVK) emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats. However, a majority required 118 seats. Since Vijay won from two constituencies (Perambur and Trichy East), he had to resign from one seat, which brought TVK’s tally down to 107.

But how was the magic number of 118 reached?

In the intense game of political chess over the last 6 days, Thalapathy Vijay succeeded in bringing together smaller parties without any help from the DMK or AIADMK:

TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam): 107 MLAs

Congress: 5 MLAs (the first party to offer support)

VCK: 2 MLAs

CPI and CPI(M): 4 MLAs (2 each)

IUML: 2 MLAs

Total Strength = 120 MLAs!

Meeting the Governor yesterday evening (May 9), Vijay handed over the letter of support from these 120 MLAs and staked his claim to form the government.

3. Support from National Leaders: Modi’s Tweet and Rahul Gandhi’s Presence!

Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony wasn’t just state-level news. The attention of the entire country was on Chennai.

Rahul Gandhi Participates: Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, was personally present at the stadium and conveyed his wishes to Vijay. Posting on X, Rahul described it saying, “Tamil Nadu has chosen a new generation, a new voice.”

PM Modi’s Congratulations: Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his congratulations to Vijay. “Congratulations to Thiru C. Joseph Vijay on taking oath as the new CM of Tamil Nadu. The Central Government will work jointly with the Tamil Nadu Government for the welfare of the people of the state,” the PM assured. Dignitaries from the Indian film industry, including Pawan Kalyan, R. Madhavan, and Kamal Haasan, also extended their greetings.

4. Vijay at Fort St. George: 3 Crucial Orders on Day 1!

Immediately after the oath ceremony, Vijay headed straight to the Chief Minister’s office at ‘Fort St. George’. As soon as he sat in the Chief Minister’s chair, he signed files related to 3 major manifesto promises made to the people:

1. 200 Units of Free Power per Family: Vijay’s first signature was on the file to provide up to 200 units of free power to every family in the state.

2. Special Force for Women’s Safety: An order to create a ‘special unit for women’s safety’ within the police department to prevent atrocities against women and deliver swift justice.

3. Special Task Force for Anti-Narcotics: Having expressed outrage over the drug menace throughout the election campaign, Vijay gave the green signal to form a ‘special unit to handle drug smuggling’ to uproot the drug mafia.

5. Impact on the Market and Economy (E-E-A-T & Financial Perspective)

As a blogger who constantly tracks the market, a very important question for me is what impact these steps by the new government will have on Tamil Nadu’s massive economy (Chennai IT Hub & Auto-hub).

Anxiety Over a Coalition Government: Tamil Nadu’s industrialists and investors have been accustomed to seeing single-party majorities (governments with a clear majority) since 1967. For the first time, a ‘coalition’ government comprising 5-6 parties has been formed. With support from the Congress and Communist (CPI/CPM) parties, the market’s eyes are on how Vijay will balance labor laws and new industrial policies.

The Burden of Freebies: Vijay signed off today on providing 200 units of free power to every home. This will add further financial burden on the state exchequer, which is already lakhs of crores of rupees in debt. We will have to wait and see how Vijay increases revenue from the IT and manufacturing sectors to offset this.

6. The Next Acid Test: ‘Floor Test’ on or before May 13

Even though Vijay has been sworn in as Chief Minister, the road ahead is not easy for him. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has instructed Vijay to seek a vote of confidence in the legislative assembly on or before May 13.

With both the DMK (59 seats) and the AIADMK (47 seats) sitting in the opposition, keeping the alliance MLAs together is the biggest challenge for Vijay. “I will not deceive the people with false promises. I will only do what is possible,” Vijay promised the people today.

Vishal V’s Takeaway (My Final Thoughts)

Roaming the streets of Bengaluru as a delivery boy, I have closely analyzed this ‘political earthquake’ in Tamil Nadu. The fact that a person who founded a party just two years ago (in 2024) has won 108 seats entirely on his own charisma, without any help from the DMK or AIADMK, and become the Chief Minister today is the biggest miracle in Indian democracy!

The TVK party’s victory in the election didn’t just come from Vijay’s ‘stardom’; it is the result of the outrage shown by the youth against the Dravidian corruption and dynasty politics that had taken root for decades.

However, cinema is different, and reality is different! From today, Vijay is not just a superstar; he is the responsible Chief Minister of the neighboring state of 8 crore Kannadigas. Managing the demands of the coalition government’s alliance leaders while bringing the state’s economy back on track will be the real test of his leadership. Will Thalapathy Vijay pass the floor test on May 13? What will the administration look like in the next 100 days? I will continuously update you on all of this right here on ‘The Rhythm & Reason’.
