Early Life and Education

Born on September 15, 1860, in Muddenahalli (near Bengaluru), Visvesvaraya grew up in a humble family. Despite financial hardships, his thirst for “Reason” led him to the College of Engineering, Pune, where he ranked first in his class.

The Engineering Legend

Sir MV’s genius wasn’t just in theories; it was in solving real-world problems.

The Automatic Sluice Gates: He designed and patented a system of automatic weir floodgates that were first installed at the Khadakwasla Reservoir in Pune. These gates raised the storage levels without damaging the dam—a feat of engineering that was revolutionary for the time.

The Krishna Raja Sagara Dam: Perhaps his greatest gift to Karnataka was the KRS Dam in Mysuru. At the time of its construction, it was the largest reservoir in Asia, turning barren lands into fertile fields for thousands of farmers.

The “Rhythm” of Discipline

Sir MV was famous for his strict lifestyle. It is said that even at the age of 95, he would dress in a formal suit and turban before starting his work. He believed that work was worship and that every task, no matter how small, deserved total perfection.

It is better to wear out than to rust out.” — Sir M. Visvesvaraya

The Diwan of Mysore

As the Diwan (P M) of Mysore, he founded the University of Mysore, State Bank of Mysore, and the Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant. He didn’t just build structures; he built the economy.

Legacy and Honors

In 1955, he was awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna. Today, his birthday, September 15, is celebrated across India as Engineers’ Day. He lived to be 101 years old, proving that a life dedicated to “Reason” and service is a life well-lived.
